Working out of an office structure can have a detrimental effect on productivity. Some people find it hard to focus and be productive when working from home. So here are a few tips to help you stay focused and be more productive while working from your home office.
Fix the work hours
When you commit yourself to fixed hours, as you are in an office environment, you will get more work done. A major perk of working from home is not having to work 9-5. If you feel that can be more productive at night, and the work nature allows you, then you can begin the work around 7:00pm. Whatever hours you choose, be committed to them and turn it in to your daily routine.
Avoid any social interactions during these timings and focus on your work. Do not forget that this work is going to be your bread and butter. Working from home offers flexibility, but this doesn’t mean that you should avoid or take it for granted. Tell your family and friends to not contact you in these timings as you are working.
Optimize your work space
You should start by defining your workspace. An ideal workspace would be secluded from distractions, a quiet and calm space, with good lighting, fast Internet reception and probably a coffee machine nearby. You should avoid making it too comfortable, and give it more of a workspace look.
If you are working for an employer from home, or if you have different clients or coworkers, it is important that you keep good communication with them. You should make them aware of your skills, capabilities, limitations, requirements, expectations etc. This will help you maintain long term working relationships. Even if you are your own boss, it is important to be clear about every aspect to yourself.
Yes, it may sound a bit old-fashioned, but you have to admit that this is almost foolproof and keeps you aware and motivated on the tasks that you are required to do on daily basis. Keeping a notepad may not be as effective as setting a to-do list on your Smartphone, which gives you reminder alerts when a task is due.
By following this pattern, you will be able to optimize your work from home routine and be more productive. What challenges do you face while working from home? Let us know in the comments section below.
